Cybertrauma definition:

“The impact of Online Harms that is; a trauma resulting from self- or, other-
directed interaction with, mediated through or from any electronic
internet/cyberspace ready device or machine learning algorithm, that results in impact now or the future. This event/interaction can be multi modal, multi-
platform and multi-interval, delayed, retrospective or immediate, Singular
or plural, and may include images, sound and text and may or may not be
vitriolic in nature. Events may include covert and overt typology and may be
virtual and corporeal and/or at the same time.”  (Knibbs, 2016-2020)

Over the years I have been called; geek, nerd, swot, n00b, techy, IT weirdo, ‘the IT guy’, cybersecurity woman, cyberlady, and more recently the online harms guru due to my work over the last decade in and around cyber trauma.

Cyber trauma is a passion and seemingly my dharma (role in life) in order to advocate and protect children, young people and adults from the impact of trauma created through, increased by and from the online/digital world.

I have spent many years writing, blogging, training and consulting on cyber trauma and to date I am the only therapist looking at this impact from a cyberpsychology perspective and putting this into clinical practice, further research and now in the process of getting my book out to help parents and professionals understand why we do what we do online and how we can assist and support when things don’t go so great. Which for many of us is likely to happen at some point. Not all incidences will be catastrophic though, however some may well be.

I have worked in and around technology since leaving school (that was some time ago) and this has spanned both sides of building, repairing and software through to gaming and the provision of therapeutic interventions using technology. Something which I am passionate about and currently teaching therapists around the UK to do lawfully and safely.

I write for e-safety companies, am conducting a PhD in cyber trauma, research in clinical practice, educate and often appear in interviews, conferences and now that we are in 2020 online spaces such as webinars. 

My goal is to de-pathologize the current narratives around tech use, young people and educate around cyber trauma. I hope to bring a trauma embodied approach to the world of cybersecurity, e-safety and parenting because we are all doing our best in a world that’s both exponential and speeding up and sometimes we need a guiding hand that supports rather than pushes us forward. 

I can be booked to consult, advise and support anyone from an individual through to large organisations, NGO’s and more. My approach is unique and based in evidence-based research and practice rather than ‘expertise’ of the read and regurgitate variety. I’ve also traversed the world of tech as it has changed and I am both excited and concerned about us as humans, though I am optimistic about our species and our future. Tech is a facilitator of human behaviour and understanding the human is the role I take in order to help you do the same.
